As a teenager I was interested in fine art and on family holidays in the Scottish Highlands I was so taken by the dramatic landscapes encountered there that I wanted to re-create them back home in the West Riding. The only way to do this was by the paintbrush. I was pretty useless at watercolour (no better now) and 60 years ago there was no acrylic, so oils it was.
It wasn’t long before life intervened, first that of a student and then as an employee in insurance, so the paintbox went in the attic until the world of work spat me out at age 60. It then occurred to me that I might try again. I continue in oils because it’s hard enough to gain any competence in the one medium without wasting time and effort trying not to be rubbish at a load of others.
My work is all figurative, mainly landscape, with some of it imagined but nearly all of it local and inspired by the magical world of Whitbarrow.
